Yihan Jin is a Chinese pianist and PhD candidate Â鶹ÊÓƵ, supervised by Dr Christina Guillaumier and Professor Kenneth Hamilton (external). Before beginning her PhD, she earned a Master of Performance with distinction from the RCM and a Bachelor of Music from Cardiff University. Her research explores the history of pianistic approaches to Prokofiev’s Nine Piano Sonatas, combining musicological and practice-led enquiry with a novel methodological approach anchored in psychological theory and performance analysis.

Alongside her doctoral research, Yihan has recently completed the training for Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) and serves as an Ordinary Member of the Royal Musical Association Student Committee, where she is actively involved in student initiatives. Recent engagements include the April 2025 “Thinking of a PhD” event for UK postgraduates, the October 2025 RMA Annual Conference at the University of Southampton, and the January 2026 RMA/BFE Research Student Conference at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

As a pianist, Yihan has performed at venues across the UK, France, and China. Nouvelles d’Europe remarked that “a simple melody gained depth and nuance under her touch.” She has also been invited to premiere works by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and has collaborated with the Cardiff University Orchestra, Cardiff University Chamber Orchestra, and BBC Ariel Orchestra.

Beyond her academic and performance work, Yihan is a passionate educator and interpreter. She has visited major conservatoires and universities in China—including the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Xi’an Conservatory of Music, Shenzhen University, and South China Normal University—facilitating UK–China projects, international masterclasses, and academic lectures. She has also appeared as guest pianist and interpreter for the Shanghai Music Publishing House’s livestream salon.
